How to Interview a Real Estate Agent without Feeling Awkward

Interviewing a real estate agent can feel a little like dating. You're trying to figure out if this person gets you, if they'll advocate for you, and if you can trust them with something deeply personal. I've had plenty of these conversations, and I can tell you the best ones feel like a mutual casual conversation, not a job interview.

If you're not sure what to ask, start with how we communicate. Do we text? Call? Ask how often we check in, and whether we're the type to keep you looped in even when there's no big news. You deserve someone who doesn't just send listings, but wants someone who listens to what you feel about them.

Then, dig a little deeper. Ask us about a time we helped a client through a tough decision. Or how we handle it when a deal starts to wobble. You're looking for emotional intelligence here, someone who can read the room, stay calm under pressure, and help you navigate the highs and lows without losing sight of what matters to you.

And don't be shy about asking what we care about. Do we know the neighborhood beyond the comps? Are we tuned into local issues, community vibes, and the stuff that makes a block feel like home? Real estate isn't just about square footage — it's about soul. You want someone who sees the full picture, not just the price tag.

At the end of the day, trust your gut. If you walk away from the conversation feeling heard, respected, and maybe even a little excited, that's a good sign. If you feel rushed or like you're just another transaction, keep looking. The right agent won't just help you buy or sell a home. They'll help you feel at home in the process.
